Skoul Terms of Use

Last Updated: September 10, 2026

Introduction

Welcome to Skoul! These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Skoul mobile application ("App"), an educational platform designed specifically for children aged 6-12. By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

IMPORTANT: Skoul is intended for children aged 6-12 years old. If your child is under the applicable age of digital consent (13 in the United States, 15 in France and Spain, or other thresholds in the EU), you as a parent or legal guardian must review and accept these Terms on behalf of your child.

The App is provided by:

HIGHTHEM
SIREN: 848274338
France

For questions or concerns, contact us at: privacy@skoul.fr

1. Acceptance of Terms

1.1 Agreement to Terms

By using Skoul, you agree to:

  • These Terms of Use
  • Our Privacy Policy (available at privacy@skoul.fr)
  • All applicable laws and regulations governing children's online privacy

1.2 Parental Consent

If your child is:

  • Under 13 (United States under COPPA)
  • Under 15 (France and Spain under GDPR)
  • Under 16 (Other EU countries under GDPR)
  • Under 13 (Other countries, as a conservative default)

You, as a parent or legal guardian, must provide consent and supervise your child's use of the App. By completing the onboarding process and checking the consent checkbox, you confirm that:

  • You are the parent or legal guardian of the child using the App
  • You have read and understood these Terms and our Privacy Policy
  • You consent to the collection and use of your child's information as described in our Privacy Policy
  • You understand that all data is stored locally on your device

1.3 Age Restrictions

Skoul is designed exclusively for children aged 6-12 years old. Users outside this age range should not use the App. We reserve the right to verify ages and enforce these restrictions.

1.4 Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App or via the email address you provide (if applicable). Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

2. Description of Service

2.1 Educational Services

Skoul is a homework coach for children aged 6-12. It provides:

Mathematics:

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and times tables, generated on the device (no internet needed)
  • Word problems, time, money and measurement exercises, generated by AI
  • Age-appropriate difficulty levels (easy, medium, hard)

Spelling (French and English):

  • Custom word lists typed in, captured from a photo, or generated by AI
  • Practice sessions with immediate feedback

Mistake review box:

  • Wrong answers come back after 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days until mastered
  • Stored on the device only

Homework help (Skoul+):

  • The child photographs a school exercise; the App sends the photo to our API for AI analysis
  • "Explain it to me" returns step-by-step hints, then the answer
  • "Check my answers" checks the answers written by the child
  • Wrong answers can be added to the review box

Parent zone (Skoul+): weekly progress, skills to work on, and an optional Sunday summary notification.

2.2 Personalization Features

  • User profiles with first name, age, and country
  • Optional avatar customization (stored locally only)
  • Difficulty adaptation based on performance
  • Progress tracking and session history (stored locally only)

2.3 Exercise Generation and Homework Analysis

Basic arithmetic and times tables are generated entirely on your device. For AI-generated exercise sets and homework scans, Skoul uses the following methods:

1. Primary Method - HIGHTHEM API (European Union):

  • Secure API hosted in the European Union
  • Only non-nominative data sent: age, country, language, difficulty, subject, question count
  • Homework scans additionally send the photo of the exercise, which is not retained after the response
  • Generated content returned and stored locally

2. Secondary Method - Google Firebase AI (Gemini, USA):

  • Fallback service when our API is unavailable
  • Same data as above (including the homework photo for scans)
  • Subject to Google's Gemini API Terms: https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms

3. Tertiary Method - Apple Intelligence (On-Device):

  • Available on supported devices (iPhone 15 Pro, iPad with M1 or later)
  • Complete on-device processing with no data transmission
  • Text recognition and exercise generation

Quotas: The free version includes 7 AI-generated practices and 5 homework exercises in total (lifetime, shared across the app). Skoul+ removes these limits.

2.4 Skoul+ Subscription

Skoul+ is an optional auto-renewing subscription that unlocks:

  • Unlimited homework scans
  • Unlimited AI exercise sets (word problems, time, money, measurements)
  • The parent zone

Price: €4.99 per month or €29.99 per year. Local prices may vary and are shown in the App Store before purchase. Prices may change; any change will be announced with notice through the App Store and will apply from the next renewal.

Free trial: New subscribers receive a 7-day free trial. The trial converts automatically into a paid subscription unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the trial period.

Automatic renewal: The subscription renews automatically at the end of each period (monthly or yearly) unless auto-renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Payment is charged to the Apple ID account at confirmation of purchase and at each renewal.

Managing or cancelling: You can manage or cancel the subscription at any time in iOS Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions, or from Settings > Skoul+ in the App. Cancelling stops the next renewal; access to Skoul+ continues until the end of the period already paid.

Who may purchase: Purchases must be made by a parent or legal guardian. The App shows a parental gate before the purchase screen, and the App Store may ask for additional confirmation.

Refunds: See Section 8.4.

2.5 Free Version and No Advertising

The core of Skoul is free: maths, reading and writing on the device, the mistake box and today's page. Skoul+ is optional. Skoul contains no advertising, ever, and does not integrate any advertising SDK.

3. User Responsibilities

3.1 Parental Supervision

Parents and guardians are responsible for:

  • Supervising their child's use of the App
  • Ensuring the device is secure (passcode/biometric lock)
  • Monitoring practice sessions and progress
  • Teaching appropriate online behavior
  • Reviewing and managing data through Settings

3.2 Device and Account Security

You are responsible for:

  • Maintaining the security of your iOS device
  • Installing iOS updates for security patches
  • Preventing unauthorized access to the App
  • Keeping your device passcode or biometric authentication secure

3.3 Accurate Information

You must provide accurate and truthful information during onboarding:

  • Child's first name
  • Age (6-12 years)
  • Country

Providing false information may result in inappropriate content delivery or compliance issues.

3.4 Prohibited Uses

You agree NOT to:

  • Use the App for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App
  • Circumvent security features or restrictions
  • Use the App to harm, abuse, or exploit children
  • Extract or scrape content from the App
  • Upload malicious content or viruses
  • Share inappropriate content through the App
  • Violate any applicable laws or regulations
  • Use the App if you are outside the 6-12 age range

4. Privacy and Data Protection

4.1 Local-First Data Storage

Skoul prioritizes your privacy through local-first architecture:

  • All personal data stored locally on your iOS device using SwiftData
  • No user accounts or login credentials required
  • No cloud synchronization of personal information
  • No remote servers storing your child's name, avatar, or practice history

4.2 Data We Collect

During onboarding, we collect:

  • First name (stored locally)
  • Age between 6-12 (stored locally)
  • Country (stored locally)
  • Optional avatar photo (stored locally as compressed JPEG)

During practice sessions, we collect locally:

  • Session completion records
  • Accuracy scores and performance metrics
  • Time spent on activities
  • Difficulty progression
  • Session history
  • Mistake review box and skill mastery
  • Homework scan history (photo and result), deletable in Settings

4.3 Data We Send for AI Features

ONLY the following non-nominative data is transmitted to our API or Firebase AI when generating AI exercise sets:

  • Age (number only, e.g., "8")
  • Country code (ISO code, e.g., "FR")
  • Language (French or English)
  • Exercise difficulty preference
  • Subject (mathematics or spelling)
  • Question count

For homework scans, the photo of the exercise is also transmitted. It is used only to produce the explanation or the check and is not retained by us after the response. On-device maths drills and times tables send nothing at all.

NEVER transmitted:

  • Child's name
  • Avatar photo
  • Practice history or session data
  • Device information (except standard HTTP headers)

4.4 Data Encryption

  • Local data encrypted at rest using iOS AES-256 encryption
  • Data in transit uses TLS 1.3+ encryption
  • Certificate pinning for backend API communications

4.5 Data Retention and Deletion

  • Local data: Retained until you delete the App or clear data in Settings
  • No server retention: We do not store personal data on our servers
  • Immediate deletion: Uninstalling the App permanently removes all local data
  • No recovery: Deleted data cannot be recovered by HIGHTHEM

4.6 Your Rights (GDPR/COPPA)

You have the right to:

  • Access: View all data in Settings > Profile
  • Rectification: Edit profile information directly in the App
  • Erasure: Delete practice data or all data by uninstalling
  • Data Portability: Export data through iOS backup mechanisms
  • Object: Disable optional features (homework help, notifications)
  • Complain: Lodge complaints with CNIL (France) or your data protection authority

For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
